What is the shortest time that it took you from purchase to breakdown on a car?

I bought a car a couple of years ago, dont have it anymore, but anyways about 20 minutes into driving it on the way home it broke down. I had to push it off the road and find my way back home without it.

Do American car makers design their cars to breakdown after a certain amount of time?

Is that how they got so good at making crappy cars while the Japanese and Germans made great cars. Is this why they are failing?
